Nigerian Leaders Urge Citizens to Safeguard Democracy

Nigerian Leaders Urge Citizens to Safeguard Democracy

Key figures, including Lagos State House of Assembly Speaker Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa and former Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola, have called on Nigerians to protect the nation’s democracy.

The appeal was made during an event organized by the State Assembly to celebrate 25 years of uninterrupted democratic governance.

They emphasized the benefits democracy has brought to Nigeria since the fourth republic began in 1999. Other notable speakers included Prof. Eghosa Osaghae, Dr. Muda Yusuf, and Mrs. Abike Dabiri-Erewa.

Speaker Obasa highlighted the enduring nature of Nigeria’s democracy despite challenges, stressing the importance of continued commitment to democratic values. “Our democracy has endured despite challenges and setbacks. We must continue to guard it jealously, for it is the foundation upon which the fabric of our nation’s progress is built,” Obasa stated.

Fashola reflected on the gains of democracy, particularly in effective representation and legislative freedom. He advocated for the federal system, calling it essential for Nigeria’s growth. “For those who are understandably impatient with democracy, I hear them. It can be a tedious way to govern. There is no better way to order our affairs. I will not trade the liberties it offers for anything else,” Fashola said.

Foreign diplomats, including Laurent Favier from France and Weert Börner from Germany, praised Nigeria’s democratic resilience and highlighted the importance of ongoing efforts to deepen democracy. They expressed their countries’ support and commitment to partnering with Nigeria in sustaining democratic values.

The event underscored the collective effort needed to preserve democracy in Nigeria, urging citizens to support democratic institutions and principles.
